Capture Your Story!
Newbury District Field Club Oral History Project
Would you be interested in sharing your story for future generations? If you were born between 1930 to 1950, and grew up, lived or worked in Newbury, Newbury District Field Club has an oral history project that is capturing stories and would be very interested to hear from you!
The project began after a talk about Plenty Engineering Works in January 2020 which raised interest in the working lives of people in Newbury. It has since expanded from employees at Plenty’s and other engineering and manufacturing firms, including Elliots, to anyone who studied or worked in Newbury from the 1950s onwards. The group aims to capture as much of Newbury’s working history as they can.
We are able to interview people in person, by phone and by email. Our in-person interviews can take place at your home or in another agreed space, wherever you are comfortable. Interviews take around an hour, depending on how much you want to share!
Recording the lives of people who used to work, and live, in Newbury is a long-term project for the Field Club with the overall aim to have these recordings available for historians, researchers and other interested people to listen to and learn from. The interviews will be added to the collection at both West Berkshire Museum and Royal Berkshire Archives. As a piece of historical research, they will be accessible to all, but you are able to withdraw permission for some or all of your recording at any time.
