Brickmaking in the Newbury District

Tony Higgott

21 October 2020

2:00pm at West Berkshire Museum

Non-members £3

Today we might order bricks for an extension or a garden wall and they arrive from some distant brickworks, the same bricks as might be ordered by someone from the other end of the country. Before it was so easy to transport heavy materials things like bricks were sourced locally. Wherever there was suitable clay there were brickworks supplying nearby building sites - and there were many in the Newbury area producing bricks that were typical to the area. This talk will look at where they were and the products they produced - still clear to see in local buildings.
