The War Poets are often credited with building the image of the Great War as one fought by 'heros led by donkeys'; the Battle of the Somme is usually used as the prime example of this leadership technique. Jane will look at this pivotal battle and look at how it effected the poetry.

Jane Burrell, former Curator of West Berkshire Museum, needs little introduction to members of the Field Club having served on the Club's committee for many years. From her first introduction to poetry as a child she has had an abiding love of it. Her special interest is the poetry of the Great War, both the famous lines by Brooke and Owen, and the little-known poems and poets.
