The Court of Aldermen is an elected body forming part of the City of London Corporation. Two Sheriffs are elected annually for the City of London by the Liverymen of the City Livery Companies. Today these are largely ceremonial roles; nevertheless they remain positions that few experience, even fewer serve in both.

John Hughsden now lives in Speen, but his career was in the City of London, which led to his service in the roles of Sherrif of the Old Bailey and Alderman of the City of London.
