Newbury 1915

Philip Wood

24 March 2015

7:30pm at St John's Parish Room

Following on from last year's talk on Newbury in 1914, Phil will look at the impact of the war on Newbury in 1915. This was the year that the wounded began to arrive back from the front; the local territorials and the enthusiastic volunteers of 1914 went into action at Neuve Chappelle and Loos, and the Yeomanry charged at Gallipoli without their horses. Meanwhile back in Newbury the reports of local losses brought home the realities of modern warfare.

Phil Wood, an enthusiastic local historian, is Deputy President of the Newbury District Field Club. For the last few years he has concentrated his efforts into uncovering all there is to know about the large number of pubs and breweries that once seemed to fill the town. Study of the existing pubs also gives him the opportunity for some enjoyable field work! More recently he has been researching the Great War casualties listed on the Newbury War Memorial.
