English Violin and Bow Makers

Philip Brown

12 October 2012

2:30pm at Newbury Town Hall

Our speaker this afternoon makes violins and bows. He follows in a long tradition of English craftsmen overshadowed (as are all violin makers) by the great C18th Italians from the Stradivari, Amati and Guarneri families. The story of his predecessors in this fascinating craft is one that will appeal to musicians, music lovers, and all who are interested in the history of a profession that still makes a product little changed since the C18th.

Philip Brown's name will be familiar to those who have noticed the small sign in Northbrook Street advertising his premises. Lovers of music may also have noted his promotion of musical events featuring the instruments he lovingly crafts. As well as making baroque violins and bows he also deals in classic stringed instruments and bows. For more information see his website.
