The History of Newtown Road Cemetery

Jane Burrell

9 March 2012

2:30pm at Newbury Town Hall

Non-members £3

An oasis of calm and nature in the middle of town, the Newtown Road Cemetery has, for a long time, been closed to public access for safety reasons. Recent efforts by Newbury Town Council, aided by the Friends of Newtwon Road Cemetery, means that this town treasure is once again open to all.

This talk will look at the birth of the cemetery in the context of a national trend towards commercial municipal cemeteries; it will look at the cemetery today and a few of it's 'residents', among whom are many whose names will be recognised by those familiar with Newbury's not so distant history.

Jane Burrell, former Curator of West Berkshire Museum, has served as Membership Secretary for the Friends and remains a part of their Memorial Inscriptions team, recording the names and epitaphs of those stones that are still legible. Jane is also a committee member of the Field Club and an enthusiastic speaker on this and many other topics - not to be missed!
