Newbury has a long history of religious nonconformity, starting well before Henry VIII decided to break with Rome and establish England as a protestant nation. From early martyrs through the Civil War to the establishment of nonconformist churchs and their ups and downs since.  From Pilgrim Fathers to establishment figures, hear about a few of the many personalities who featured in Newbury's colourful religious life over the years.

Phil Wood, an enthusiastic local historian, is President of the Newbury District Field Club. For the last few years he has concentrated his efforts into uncovering all there is to know about the large number of pubs and breweries that once seemed to fill the town. Study of the existing pubs also gives him the opportunity for some enjoyable field work!
