THE SPEAKERS

Peter Hart is the oral historian at the Imperial War Museum, a prolific author and a very popular and entertaining speaker on Great War topics. His latest book The Last Battle deals with the final throes of the conflict as British & Empire troops advanced on Germany side by side with their French and, for the first time, US allies. This is also the subject of his talk this year.

Jane Burrell is a former museum curator (West Berkshire Museum, Bridport Museum & Airborne Forces Museum). Having started her curatorial career at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst Collection she has a long interest in military history and a passion for the poetry inspired by war, particularly the Great War. In her talk Jane will look at The Work of the Imperial (now Commonwealth) War Graves Commission in creating and caring for the final resting places of the men who fell in the conflict.

Phil Wood is the man behind the Newbury Remembers project, telling the stories behind the WW1 names on the Newbury War Memorial. His annual series of talks and exhibitions on Newbury in WW1 reaches 1918 this year. In this series of talks Phil will address an almost forgotten battle of the war - The German Spring Offensive - for a while it seemed that the German onslaught might end the war in their favour - what happened and why?
